Alternative methods to pursue a case?

If you become a victim of a crime or dispute, I would urge you to consider whether there are any other alternatives than taking the matter to the police or pursuing a civil case in court. Once or if the case proceeds - and especially after it concludes - the outcome may be quite different from what a layperson might expect. In fact, even a legal expert could be surprised. What begins as a “kind cow” might turn into an “angry tiny snake” by the time the justice system is finished with it.

(Disclaimer: this is not to blame the system, but to make some observations, and everyone makes their own decisions)

Victim of violence (mainly regarding Finnish Law)

If you are a victim of a violent crime, seek medical attention immediately to have your injuries documented. If you are unable to go there yourself, ask for help or call an ambulance. At the hospital, a doctor must create an injury report of you, marked on a human body diagram.
In cases of sexual crimes, it is crucial that you do not wash yourself or change clothes before going to the hospital. The hospital will perform the necessary tests, and the police should come and hear the victim’s account. The victim's statement must be recorded accurately, as time and trauma fade memories and make legal proceedings more difficult later. Upon request, your case will be handled confidentially in court.
For some victims of sexual crimes, being able to tell their story in court can be empowering. For others, it is horrifying. If possible, contact a lawyer or a trusted person at an early stage. Children’s first interviews should be recorded on video by the police if they are victims of sexual crimes. In my opinion, this practice would be beneficial for adults as well.

Väkivaltarikoksen uhri

Jos olet väkivaltarikoksen uhri, hakeudu heti sairallaan vammojen todentamiseen. Jos et itse pysty sinne menemään, pyydä apua tai soita ambulanssi. Siellä lääkärin on tehtävä sinusta vammaraportti ihmistä kuvaavaan piirokseen.

Seksuaalirikoksissa on ensiarvoisen tärkeää, ettet peseydy tai vaihda vaatteita ennen sairaalaan menemistä. Sairaala teettää tarvittavat testit, ja poliisin on hyvä tulla paikalle kuulemaan uhria. On erittäin tärkeää, että uhrin kertomus kirjataan tarkasti, koska aika ja trauma haalistavat muistoja ja vaikeuttavat myöhemmin oikeusprosessia. Pyynnöstä asiasi käsitellään salaisena oikeudessa.

Joillekin seksuaalirikoksen uhreille on voimauttavaa päästä kertomaan asiansa oikeudessa. Joillekin se on hirvittävää. Jos mahdollista, ota yhteyttä juristiin tai luotettavaan ihmiseesi jo alkuvaiheessa.

Lasten ensimmäinen kuuleminen tulisi videoida poliisin toimesta, mikäli he ovat seksuaalirikosten uhreja. Mielestäni tämä käytäntö olisi hyvä myös aikuisten kohdalla.
